Would Isak Signing Make Liverpool’s Transfer Window The Best Ever?

Alexander Isak wants out of Newcastle United and most assume the Swedish striker has his sights set on a switch to Liverpool. The Premier League champions made an approach for the 25-year-old before signing Hugo Ekitike last. Most presumed it was a case of one or the other, but it now seems possible that Liverpool could also land Isak.

Isak is one of the best centre forwards in the Premier League at this moment in time. He has scored 44 league goals over the last two seasons and has been likened to Thierry Henry in the way he plays at such speed and with a natural ability for finding the back of the net. It would take a Premier League-record transfer fee to convince Newcastle to sell.

The signing of Isak would theoretically take Liverpool’s forward line to the next level with Ekitike already someone who can play in a number of different attacking positions. One is considered among the best in his position in world soccer while the other has the potential to join Isak in being held in such esteem.

Liverpool has already broken the Premier League transfer record this summer to sign Florian Wirtz. The German playmaker had his pick of Europe’s biggest clubs with Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Real Madrid all interested, but Wirtz instead decided on joining the English champions.

Wirtz will change the way Liverpool plays. Arne Slot was known for his possession-orientated approach at Feyenoord and could now carry over some of his own ideas having largely used Jurgen Klopp’s team and style of play in his first Premier League campaign. The signing of Wirtz could signify this shift.

Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez have also joined Liverpool to give Slot two new options in the full back positions, something that is particularly important after the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid. The Premier League champions have strengthened from a position of strength over the summer.

A summer window that sees Liverpool sign Isak, Wirtz, Frimpong and Kerkez would rank among the best-ever in the Premier League. Manchester United did something after winning the Premier League in 2007, adding Carlos Tevez, Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson, but Isak and Wirtz are on a different level to any of these signings made nearly 20 years ago.

The signing of Isak would take Liverpool’s summer spending to over $400m. It would be the sort of transfer window supporters have dreamed about for years when the Reds have largely kept their hands in their pockets. Liverpool strolled to the Premier League title last season. Imagine how much better Slot’s team could be after $400m of signings.
