James Gunn’s Superman is looking at about a 56% drop in business from its opening weekend at the domestic box office in its second Friday to Sunday frame.
The first film from Gunn and Peter Safran’s recalibrated DC Studios opened with $125 million domestically from July 11-13. Coming into the weekend, the David Corenswet-led film’s domestic tally was $177.7 million.
Facing off against newcomers I Know What You Did Last Summer, Smurfs and Eddington, Superman is looking to keep the domestic box office crown this weekend with $55 million in ticket sales from 4,275 North American theaters through Sunday, Deadline projects.
Should that projection hold, it will boost Warner Bros.’ new Man of Steel movie’s running domestic tally to $232.7 million through Sunday. Combined with the film’s international ticket sales, Deadline projects that Superman will cross the $400 million mark at the worldwide box office this weekend.
Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World Rebirth is projected by Deadline to earn $21.5 million from 3,854 theaters for the No. 2 spot. Should the projection hold, it will up the film’s domestic take to $274.2 million.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Reboot Is Projected To Open At No. 3
Columbia Pictures and Screen Gems’ reboot of the 1997 slasher hit I Know What You Did Last Summer is projected by Deadline to open at No. 3 with $13 million to $15 million from 3,206 North American theaters.
I Know What You Did Last Summer had an $18 million production budget before prints and advertising costs, Variety reported.
The legacy sequel brings back Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt and introduces several new cast members trying to elude the Southport killer, including Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers and Sarah Pidgeon.
Paramount Pictures animated movie Smurfs is projected by Deadline to open at No. 4 with $12 million in ticket sales from 3,504 North American locations against a $58 million budget before P&A, per Variety.
Meanwhile, Brad Pitt’s F1: The Movie is projected by Deadline to round out the top five with $9.4 million from 3,094 theaters domestically. Should the projection hold, it will boost the Apple Original Films production — which is being distributed by Warner Bros. — to $153.4 million in ticket sales domestically.
Also opening is Ari Aster’s COVID drama Eddington, which Deadline is projecting will earn $4.5 million from 2,111 North American theaters. The trade publication reported that the A24 film, which stars Pedro Pascal and Joaquin Phoenix, had a $25 million budget before P&A.
