TikTok’s ‘4th Of July Antipasto’ Controversy, Explained

A tearful TikTok released by a woman who was rejected from a 4th of July party has sparked a chain reaction of dramatic commentary, debate, memes and backlash on TikTok.

The hosts and spurned guest dispute what really happened that day, but TikTokers seem to have made up their minds.

What Happened During TikTok’s ‘4th Of July Antipasto’ Party?

If you haven’t caught up on the controversy, it all began with a video made by Nicole, the TikTok creator behind @folkmedicineremedies.

After being rejected from a 4th of July party and reduced to tears, Nicole posted a video explaining what had just happened to her.

Nicole said that she was new to her neighborhood and was invited to a party by the mother of her son’s friend, Samantha. This party was hosted by a local couple, Jake and Stasia Hicks.

Nicole prepared an antipasto to bring to the party, containing homegrown vegetables and a variety of meats and cheese.

According to Nicole, once she and her son arrived they were greeted with hostility—she was told that Jake was furious that a stranger had entered his house.

Nicole claims that despite her attempts to be friendly and introduce herself, she was made to feel unwelcome, as though she had shown up uninvited.

Hence, Nicole left the party, despondent at having been rejected and confused at the cold reception. In her viral video, Nicole despairingly said, “This is why you don’t make friends in your thirties.”

The feeling of not belonging, of breaking some unspoken social norm, is clearly a common one, and Nicole’s video went viral—it’s currently at more than 30 million views, and has been liked more than 2.9 million times.

Stasia Posts A Response Video On TikTok

Commentators from around the world have expressed support for Nicole in the comments of her TikTok, but what really got the story going was the video response from the party host, Stasia.

Stasia posted a TikTok explaining her side of the story, but quickly deleted the video after swift online backlash. TikTokers saved the apology video before it was deleted—nothing on the internet gets forgotten.

In her video, Stasia essentially confirms Nicole’s story of rejection, and says that Nicole was welcome to “hang out,” but that they did not want her in their house (it’s unclear what she meant by this).

Stasia also insisted that the 4th of July event was “not a party,” but a “get-together of people who knew each other.”

Of course, this contradictory phrase instantly became a meme, repeated by TikTokers commenting on the drama, or making comedy sketches.

In her deleted response, Stasia mentions that TikTok users were flocking to her, her husband and her mother-in-law’s social media pages to harass them, indicating that the situation was already getting out of control.

The Antipasto Plot Thickens

Nicole has since thanked her flood of new followers for their support, as well as boosting her account into the TikTok Creator Rewards Program, and has continued to share details about the “get-together.”

On TikTok, Nicole shared a text exchange with Samantha, the mother who invited her, and Samantha reveals that Stasia and Jake were told that she was invited—Samantha even shared a picture of the meal Nicole had prepared, the now-iconic antipasto.

Nicole also recorded her conversation with Jake, who called her to apologize, saying that he was not expecting her and didn’t know who she was. Nicole disputes this, and Jake eventually admits that he knew she was coming, but he had expected her to just drop off her son and leave.

At this point, Jake’s mother got involved and posted a defensive TikTok, doubling down on the insistence that the event was not a party, but a “cookout for the neighbors.”

She also posted footage of the event from the house Ring camera, but quickly deleted it after backlash from commentators.

In our extremely online era, anyone caught in an internet backlash should understand that the best response is to say nothing at all—drama will pass once the subject ceases making more content.

But in this case, the controversy continued to swirl. The 4th of July get-together, or cookout—whatever it was—became the topic of many comedy skits and memes.

While not everyone agrees that Nicole was in the right, the consensus seems overwhelmingly on her side, to the point where TikTokers are pointing out that they have never seen the site so united over anything.

As to why this local drama went viral, it might be something to do with the current epidemic of loneliness—TikTokers really related to Nicole’s original video, to the feeling of not quite belonging.

Commentators are particularly passionate about the antipasto—it looked genuinely delicious—the Hicks’ rejection of a good, homemade meal seems to be the greatest mistake of all.
