The Sandman. Tom Sturridge as Dream in episode 203 of The Sandman.
The second and final season of The Sandman, starring Tom Sturridge, has arrived. The first six episodes are now streaming on Netflix, but what about the rest of the season? This installment will roll out very differently from other shows on the platform, so make sure to keep reading for the full release schedule.
Based on the beloved DC comic series, The Sandman Season 2 will deliver a “thrilling conclusion” to Dream’s story, according to the streamer. “After a fateful reunion with his family, Dream of the Endless (Sturridge) must face one impossible decision after another as he attempts to save himself, his kingdom, and the waking world from the epic fallout of his past misdeeds,” the synopsis reads.
“To make amends, Dream must confront longtime friends and foes, gods, monsters, and mortals. But the path to forgiveness is full of unexpected twists and turns, and true absolution may cost Dream everything,” the description continues.
Season 2 will bring several storylines from the comic books to the screen, including the “Season of Mists,” “Brief Lives,” “The Kindly Ones,” and “The Sandman: Overture” collections. It will also feature standalone stories such as “Tales in the Sand,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “The Song of Orpheus,” “Thermidor,” and “The Tempest” and more.
Unfortunately, the second season also marks the end of the costly series, which reportedly had a $15 million-per-episode budget in 2022. Showrunner Allan Heinberg recently told Netflix’s Tudum that the decision to end the show was due to the limited remaining source material about Dream in the comics.
“The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” Heinberg said. He added that he was grateful Netflix gave the series “the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”
