Goodwill Alliance Drastically Reduces Sandwich Attacks on BNB Chain

The BNB Chain community’s Goodwill Alliance (GWA), launched in March 2025, has achieved a remarkable 95% reduction in sandwich attacks, a form of malicious miner extractable value (MEV) exploitation. This initiative, backed by validators, builders, and infrastructure providers, has made significant strides towards creating a fairer and safer on-chain trading environment, according to BNB Chain.

Key Achievements

The GWA’s coordinated efforts have drastically reduced the volume of sandwich attacks on BNB Chain. Dashboards from BNBChain and other collaborators, such as Hildobby, show that attack volumes have plummeted by over 95%. The daily frequency of such attacks has dropped from 140,000 to under 1,000, marking a substantial improvement in user protection and validator integrity.

Full participation from active validators has been crucial, as they now enforce GWA protections by integrating MEV-protected builders. Infrastructure support from contributors like 48Club, BlockRazor, BloxRoute, and NodeReal has been pivotal, particularly following the Lorentz upgrade, which reduced block times and enhanced the efficiency of detecting and filtering sandwich attacks.

Moreover, major wallets such as Trust Wallet, Binance Wallet, OKX Wallet, TokenPocket, and SafePal have incorporated automatic MEV protection into their swap interfaces, further safeguarding users.

Builders & Validators Contributions

The builders within the Goodwill Alliance have integrated sandwich filtering algorithms into their block-building logic, proactively excluding malicious MEV bundles. The GWA has also launched a public performance dashboard to enhance transparency.

48 Club has proposed ‘bscexorcist,’ an open-source sandwich attack detector tailored for GWA, which identifies attack patterns across blocks, addressing vectors beyond single-bundle detection. BlockRazor has contributed significantly through educational content and monitoring tools, enhancing transparency and accountability.

Validators play an essential role by accepting block bids only from GWA-compliant builders and participating in testing new detectors, supporting the propagation of MEV-safe blocks.

Challenges and Future Directions

Despite the progress, challenges remain as MEV strategies continue to evolve. Cross-block attacks present detection difficulties, requiring advanced pattern recognition. Additionally, trade-offs between latency, detection accuracy, and economic viability persist, along with a lack of standardized tooling for performance comparisons.

The GWA plans to address these challenges by implementing performance benchmarking, setting clear entry and exit criteria for builders, fostering open collaboration and reviews, and optimizing the trading experience to reduce confirmation latency and improve transaction ordering.
