Crypto Scammer Allegedly Bilks Coinbase Users Out of $4M, Flaunts Riches & Gambles Away Fortune

A notorious on-chain investigator, ZachXBT, has unveiled a detailed exposé accusing New York-based social engineering scammer Christian “Daytwo” Nieves of pilfering over $4 million from unsuspecting Coinbase users.

The alleged culprit, who also operates under the moniker “PawsOnHips,” is accused of openly parading his illicit gains on social media before dissipating a substantial portion of the stolen funds through gambling.

In a comprehensive X thread published on Monday, ZachXBT meticulously outlined Nieves’ alleged modus operandi. Nieves is said to head a small, illicit call center crew specializing in sophisticated social engineering attacks designed to trick crypto investors into divulging their sensitive information. The scheme reportedly involves callers impersonating official Coinbase support staff, skillfully guiding victims to deceptive phishing websites designed to drain their crypto holdings.

One particularly egregious incident highlighted by ZachXBT involved a November 2024 attack that siphoned a staggering $240,000 from an elderly victim. Through diligent on-chain detective work, ZachXBT not only secured a private recording of the alleged theft but also successfully traced the stolen funds to three distinct destinations. These included significant transfers to the Roobet crypto casino and two separate addresses that facilitated the swift conversion of Bitcoin into privacy-centric Monero (XMR), a common tactic used to obscure money trails.

Further blockchain forensics, as revealed by ZachXBT, tied Nieves’ Roobet deposit address to more than 30 suspected thefts, indicating a much broader scope to his alleged criminal enterprise. The investigator warned that numerous other victims likely remain unaware they have been compromised. Compounding the audacity, ZachXBT claims that Nieves has brazenly boasted on Discord about his money laundering activities, particularly those conducted through gambling.

Beyond the digital paper trail, Nieves is also accused of indulging in a lavish lifestyle funded by his ill-gotten gains. Reports suggest he splurged on luxury items, including a custom-decalled Corvette and a high-end Rolex watch, openly displaying his opulence. In a defiant response to ZachXBT’s initial investigation last month, Nieves reportedly posted a photo of himself flipping the middle finger towards the sleuth’s profile, a gesture that underscores the brazen nature of his alleged activities.

This investigation by ZachXBT serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threats within the cryptocurrency landscape and the crucial role of on-chain sleuths in unmasking bad actors. It also highlights the importance of user vigilance against social engineering tactics and the need for robust security measures when interacting with crypto platforms.
