Meta just launched a new line of “Performance AI Glasses” in partnership with Oakley — yes, the action-sport eyewear brand. These aren’t your hipster Ray-Bans. These are the Oakley Meta HSTN (pronounced “HOW-stuhn”), and they’re built for a future where your face is your new home screen.

The Oakley Meta HSTN glasses are rugged, bold, and built for motion. While early rumors teased a bridge-mounted camera, Meta went with a more traditional setup: a 12MP ultra-wide camera on one side and a recording indicator LED on the other. These things shoot in 3K video, a big bump up from the 1080p on the Ray-Ban Meta glasses.

Meta’s not alone in this face-tech gold rush. Snap’s dropping AI-enabled “Specs” in 2026, claiming they’ll “understand the world around you.”

At the Augmented World Expo 2025, Snap Inc. officially announced that its new Specs—slim, lightweight augmented reality glasses—will hit the market in 2026. Co‑founder Evan Spiegel pitched Specs as “the most advanced personal computer in the world,” highlighting that after 11 years and over $3 billion in R&D, Snap is prepared to revolutionize how we interact with digital content in real life. 

Specs will run on an upgraded Snap OS designed for immersive AR, featuring deep integrations with OpenAI and Google’s Gemini. Through APIs for depth perception, real-time transcription in over 40 languages, and dynamic 3D rendering, developers can build tools like live translation, cooking guides, pool coaching, and location‑based games—already in prototype thanks to Spectacles developer units.

Before consumer launch, Snap released Spectacles 5 to developers in 2024 to gather vital insights on field of view, pixel clarity, tint control, and social comfort. Early feedback has shaped Specs into a sleeker package with improved visuals, better battery life, and a focus on privacy via on‑device AI processing. Unlike tethered headsets, Specs are fully standalone—no puck or phone needed.

Meanwhile, Amazon is sniffing around the Alexa-glasses concept again. And Apple, ever the late-stage perfectionist, is quietly rumored to be prepping their own stylish entry to go toe-to-toe with Meta.

And these companies aren’t just tossing cameras into sunglasses for fun. They’re chasing the post-smartphone era — the next dominant way we’ll interact with tech and AI. 

The Market’s Heating Up

If you think this is still niche nerd gear, think again. Meta has already sold over 2 million Ray-Ban Meta glasses since late 2023.
