Mariah Carey scores her first solo No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales and R&B … More
Mariah Carey returns to the Billboard charts this week as she officially kicks off a new era. The elusive chanteuse launches “Type Dangerous” on double-digit rankings, as the track becomes a quick winner on lists dedicated to streaming activity, pure purchases, and radio airplay. The newly-released cut even manages to bring the superstar back to the top spot on a handful of tallies, but this latest smash stands out from her past successes for a very special reason.
“Type Dangerous” Debuts at No. 1
“Type Dangerous” debuts at No. 1 on both the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales and R&B Digital Song Sales charts. Carey collects her third career champion on both of those rankings, which focus entirely on purchases. Though she’s reached the summit with a number of different tracks in the past, this feat marks a new milestone.
Mariah Carey’s Past No. 1s
On the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart, Carey first led with “Oh Santa!” alongside Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson. That tune opened in first place in mid-December 2020. Only months later, she joined rapper Latto on a remix of “Big Energy,” which ruled in February 2022, but launched on the list in October of the previous year.
Meanwhile, on the R&B Digital Song Sales tally, which is slightly more specific, she’s commanded the ranking with both “Oh Santa!” and “#Beautiful,” her collaboration with Miguel. That tune debuted in first place in May 2013.
Her First Solo Champion
As “Type Dangerous” arrives at No. 1 on both sales rosters, Carey collects her first solo No. 1. She’s ruled multiple Billboard charts on her own in the past, but somehow never either of these purchase-only rankings.
Mariah Carey’s Healthy Track Record Inside the Top 10
When it comes to appearances inside the top 10, Carey has fared far better on the R&B Digital Song Sales chart. She’s now scored more than twice as many placements in that region on that tally compared to the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales list. “Type Dangerous” marks her sixteenth trip to the top 10 on the R&B-only tally and just her seventh on the ranking that also includes hip-hop and rap tunes.
“Type Dangerous” Lands High on the General Sales Chart
“Type Dangerous” sold so well that it launches at No. 4 on the all-genre Digital Song Sales chart. Luminate reports that the track opens with a little under 5,100 copies sold, putting it behind only “Scornful Woman” by Oliver Anthony Music and “Manchild” by Sabrina Carpenter, which collect the top debut and the second-highest rising opening of the week, respectively.
