Luke Combs and Bailey Zimmerman’s “Backup Plan” debuts at No. 1 on the Country Digital Song Sales … More
It’s been almost two years since Luke Combs last collected a bestselling hit on the country charts. Now, the singer and songwriter returns to the top spot on a Billboard tally he knows well, thanks to his new collaboration “Backup Plan,” a duet with Bailey Zimmerman.
Thanks to its success in pure purchases, fans of both artists have turned the track into a No. 1. Combs reaches several milestones with his latest success as he returns to the summit.
Luke Combs Returns to No. 1
“Backup Plan” launches at No. 1 on just one tally in America, the Country Digital Song Sales chart. Luminate reports that in its first tracking frame, the collaboration sold 3,350 copies — enough to help it debut in first place on Billboard’s ranking of the bestselling country-only tracks in the United States.
Luke Combs Earns His Tenth No. 1
With “Backup Plan,” Combs collects his milestone tenth No. 1 on the Country Digital Song Sales chart. He first reached the summit with “Beautiful Crazy” in May 2018 and last led the tally with a new champion in June 2023 when his cover of “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman became one of the biggest successes of his career. Combs has topped the Country Digital Song Sales tally with all of the following tracks: “Beautiful Crazy,” “Beer Never Broke My Heart,” “Even Though I’m Leaving,” “1, 2 Many” with Brooks & Dunn, “Six Feet Apart,” “Forever After All,” “Tomorrow Me,” “The Kind of Love We Make,” “Fast Car,” and now “Backup Plan” with Bailey Zimmerman.
A Milestone Top 10 Hit for Luke Combs
In addition to becoming his tenth No. 1, “Backup Plan” also earns Combs his milestone fortieth top 10 on the Country Digital Song Sales chart. Over the years, he’s placed a total of 48 tracks somewhere on the list, meaning nearly all of them have become top 10 smashes, with only a handful failing to rise into that uppermost region.
Bailey Zimmerman Continues His Winning Streak
Zimmerman’s counts aren’t quite as impressive as Combs’s, but his track record is improving all the time. The country artist has now collected eight top 10s on the Country Digital Song Sales chart. Four of those — “Rock and a Hard Place,” “Where It Ends,” “All the Way” with BigXthaPlug, and now “Backup Plan” — have ruled, with the latter two doing so in 2025 alone.
“Backup Plan” Debuts on Multiple Billboard Charts
Strong sales are largely responsible for the success of “Backup Plan” across several Billboard rankings. It opens at No. 6 on the Digital Song Sales chart and lands at No. 36 on the Hot 100. The track also performs well when it comes to streaming platforms, as it launches at No. 26 on the all-genre Streaming Songs tally and No. 8 on the Country Streaming Songs list.
