Fallout
Fallout has already cemented itself as one of the best live-action video game adaptations ever, even after just one season, and there’s some news for fans looking for info about when season 2 is coming.
It’s just been confirmed in a rather funny video that has Walton Goggins tearing off his prosthetic ghoul makeup that season 2 has now wrapped production, meaning it is done filming and is entering post production.
So, it’s almost here, right? No, no it is not.
We can go back to Fallout season 1 which wrapped filming on March 4 in 2023. Then, the air date of the actual series was not until April 10 in 2024. That means we had a 13 month gap for post-production alone after filming completed.
So if production ended today, we would not see the show air until June of 2026, mostly likely, over a year from now, and that would be two and a quarter years between seasons, on the long end of streaming gaps even in the age of…extremely long streaming gaps.
In this instance, I wonder if some of this could have had to do with the insanely busy schedule of Walton Goggins, who just wrapped up turns in both The White Lotus and Righteous Gemstones, both high profile HBO shows. Plus, this was on his plate, filming after those. But I really just think that TV production takes so long now, especially on big-budget shows like this, it’s become almost impossible to avoid these gaps, which is exhausting. A comparison point would be HBO’s The Last of Us, airing now, but after a nearly two and a half year gap from season 1 to season 2.
It’s frustrating, but at least we know that season 2 is probably destined to be pretty cool, as the series has teased that it is heading to a famed location, New Vegas, where one of the most beloved games in the series took place, and there will likely be a lot of lore overlap. But the Fallout show thrives in part because it’s forging its own story rather than trying to 1:1 copy one of the existing games, which I do not imagine would be going nearly as well compared to what we see here. Hard to imagine the series without Ella Purnell and Goggins’ characters, for instance.
So yeah, very long wait. Obnoxiously long wait. But such is the way of things now, and it does not seem like it’s going to get better any time soon.
