BlackRock significantly ramped up its involvement in the Bitcoin ecosystem during the first quarter of 2025, with total exposure to Bitcoin-related assets now exceeding $5.4 billion, based on figures compiled by Timechainindex.
One of the most notable moves was the expansion of its holdings in the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT). Between late 2024 and March 2025, BlackRock added over 3.2 million IBIT shares, bringing its total to about 5.85 million, valued at approximately $274 million.
In a notable strategic pivot, BlackRock didn’t limit its interest to its own ETF product. It also made its first investments in competing spot Bitcoin ETFs, including nearly 71,000 shares of Fidelity’s FBTC and smaller stakes in both Grayscale’s GBTC and its GBTC Mini.
Combined, these alternative ETF positions are estimated to be worth over $5 million, pushing its total spot Bitcoin ETF exposure to around $279 million.
Beyond ETFs, BlackRock has expanded its footprint into public companies with heavy exposure to Bitcoin. The asset manager raised its stake in Strategy Inc. (formerly MicroStrategy) to more than 14.4 million shares, and also picked up over 620,000 Series A preferred shares and nearly 15 million shares via two of Strategy’s commercial note offerings.
Altogether, BlackRock’s investment in Strategy now surpasses $4.23 billion.
The firm also stepped up its bets on the mining sector, with nearly $1 billion allocated across several major Bitcoin mining companies, including Riot Platforms, Marathon Digital, and TeraWulf—further cementing its multi-pronged approach to gaining exposure to the digital asset space.
