Hackers appear to have taken control of the New York Post’s official X account to trick crypto users. Instead of public scams, they sent direct messages pretending to offer podcast invites.
Several users in the crypto space said they received these suspicious messages. The account directed them to contact someone on Telegram to discuss the supposed podcast feature.
First Reports and Unusual Tactics
Kerberus CEO Alex Katz exposed the scam on May 3. He shared a screenshot showing a message from journalist Paul Sperry—sent via the verified @nypost handle.
Unlike typical crypto scams, the hacker didn’t use links to known wallet drainers or shady sites. Instead, the scam focused on private communication. Cybersecurity expert and NFT collector “Drew” noted this shift in strategy.
“This scammer isn’t pushing Pump.fun or a wallet drainer link,” he explained. “They’re baiting users in DMs and redirecting them to Telegram.”
To avoid getting caught, the hacker blocks recipients right after sending the message. This prevents victims from alerting the real New York Post team. It also delays discovery of the breach.
The motive seems clear: lure victims away from X and into a controlled space on Telegram, where more aggressive phishing can occur.
