Los Angeles Chargers Are Bound For This Summer’s Hall Of Fame Game

The Los Angeles Chargers will kick off their preseason at the hallowed grounds of Canton, Ohio.

The Chargers are playing the Detroit Lions in the Hall of Fame game on July 31 as the NFL christens its 106th season.

The contest is part of the enshrinement week ceremonies, which will included the induction of former Chargers tight end Antonio Gates.

The extra date in Ohio means the Chargers will have four exhibition games, with one at home and the additional two on the road.

L.A., coming off a playoff season in which it went 11-6 in coach Jim Harbaugh’s first season, is no stranger to the annual exhibition game played next door to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

It marks the third time the Chargers have been chosen, but it’s their first nod since 1994 when the played the Atlanta Falcons. L.A. would go on that season to a win the AFC title and appear in its lone Super Bowl.

L.A. has the distinction of participating in the game’s only scoreless affair when it faced the Green Bay Packers in an 1980 contest that was cancelled in the fourth quarter because of inclement weather.

Joining Gates in being honored will be Eric Allen, Jared Allen and Sterling Sharpe. The decorated foursome will be introduced prior to the Chargers-Lions kickoff.

The Chargers will also travel to Brazil this year, when opening the regular season on Sept. 5 against an opponent yet to be named.
