Global supermarket chain SPAR has officially started accepting Bitcoin payments at its store in Zug, Switzerland.
This move allows customers to pay directly with Bitcoin over the Lightning Network using DFX Swiss’s OpenCryptoPay solution for instant and seamless transactions at the checkout.
Located in the heart of Zug, commonly known as “Crypto Valley,” the store joins the rapidly growing list of 1,013 businesses across Switzerland that now accept Bitcoin.
“This SPAR location is among the first supermarkets in Switzerland where you can pay directly at the checkout using Bitcoin via LNURL,” DFX Swiss said.
Rahim Taghizadegan, director of the Bitcoin Association Switzerland, introduced the simplicity of the payment process: “Just scan a static QR code, send satoshis, and it is instantly and easily recorded by the cashier.”
Zug’s leadership in crypto adoption is being followed by other Swiss cities, such as Lugano, which has attracted international attention with its ambitious “Plan ₿” initiative. Backed by Mayor Michele Foletti, the plan would position Bitcoin as de facto legal tender in the city, allowing it to be used for taxes, utilities and purchases from hundreds of local merchants.
