The Trump administration is pursuing a strategic maneuver to shift California Governor Gavin Newsom’s legal confrontation regarding the U.S. tariff strategy from the San Francisco Federal Court to the New York International Trade Court. On April 18th, attorneys from the U.S. Department of Justice filed a motion asserting that the trade court possesses exclusive jurisdiction over tariff-related disputes. Governor Newsom, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party and a potential presidential contender for 2028, has partnered with California Attorney General Rob Bonta in this legal battle. Their lawsuit aims to bar President Trump from leveraging emergency powers to implement extensive tariffs on neighboring countries such as Mexico and Canada.
In their filing, Newsom and Bonta highlighted the detrimental effects these tariffs could have on California’s economy, which ranks as the fifth-largest economy globally, impacting vital sectors including agriculture and entertainment. Moreover, Trump’s proposed tariffs are currently under scrutiny in at least three additional lawsuits, two initiated by conservative advocacy groups representing small businesses and another filed by members of the Blackfeet tribe in Montana.
