Binance Founder Makes a Notable Donation for Earthquake Relief in Thailand and Myanmar

Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, co-founder of Binance, has pledged to donate 500 BNB tokens to aid the relief efforts in Thailand and Myanmar following a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the region.

The earthquake has caused significant destruction, including widespread flooding and the collapse of buildings. Zhao’s donation aims to provide immediate assistance to those affected.

In a post shared on social media on March 28, Zhao expressed his hope for the safety of everyone in Thailand, before announcing the funds he would be directing to both countries. If no third-party platform is available to facilitate the donations, Binance and Binance Thailand will handle the distribution of these funds directly.

As of now, at least 144 people have lost their lives due to the quake, with rescue teams working tirelessly to free individuals trapped under rubble. The earthquake, which occurred around 1:20 PM local time, had its epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. The toll of the disaster is expected to rise as emergency efforts continue.

The earthquake has also prompted Myanmar’s leader, Min Aung Hlaing, to appeal for international support to assist in the relief operations.

Cryptocurrency donations have proven to be a powerful tool for providing timely aid in such crises, thanks to their efficiency and low transaction fees. This was notably demonstrated in 2023, when crypto donations were used to support victims of the Turkey-Syria earthquake, as well as for those affected by the Maui wildfires. These efforts show how crypto can be leveraged for quick and impactful humanitarian support in times of need.
