In a recent statement, Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer of Bitwise, emphasized the United States’ potential transition toward a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR), foreseeing that such a development could initiate a global trend towards Bitcoin acquisition. According to Hougan, irrespective of how the U.S. reserve is structured, its existence would signify Bitcoin’s emergence as a monetary asset of global importance. He mentioned, “This feels to me like a game-changer,” highlighting the pivotal nature of this strategic move.
Hougan argued that nations like Honduras, Mexico, and Guatemala would be compelled to reconsider their stance on Bitcoin holdings, especially in light of El Salvador’s prior adoption and the United States’ prospective accumulation of the cryptocurrency. He questioned whether established economies such as Dubai, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia could remain passive as the U.S. leads in Bitcoin adoption.
The limited supply of Bitcoin suggests that increased demand driven by this anticipated international rush could result in significant price surges. Hougan firmly believes that the U.S.’s decision to embrace Bitcoin as a reserve asset would incite fierce competition among nations, potentially reshaping the future of global finance.
