Sony has reportedly canceled a live service massively multiplayer game (MMO) set in Horizon’s world.
In a partnership with NCSOFT, a Korean publisher, Sony’s MMO under the code names Project H and Project Skyline, was planned to come out on PS5, PC, and mobile platforms.
However, according to an MTN Korea report, the game has been shut down. The report states that NCSOFT canceled the project after determining it wasn’t workable. Workers assigned to this project will now join different workgroups.
NCSOFT may also shut down operations
NCSOFT made th tough choice to cancel the games in development because its business is in a difficult financial spot. The company’s two bosses recently warned workers that failing to improve business performance by 2025 could mean closing down.
The company’s CEOs, Kim Taek-jin and Park Byung-moo, said, “Let’s make 2025 a year of bone-crushing efforts with the mindset that if we don’t turn around by 2025, NCSOFT will never have a future.”
Sony disclosed its collaboration with NCSOFT last year, seeking to develop games outside the console market.
At the beginning of this collaboration, Sony’s previous boss, Jim Ryan, explained, “Like SIE, NCSOFT shares a similar vision in creating high-quality, impactful entertainment experiences for players everywhere,”
Sony’s attempts to push live services fall short of expectations
Other live service attempts by Sony have not been successful either. Sony ended the development of two games, Bluepoint’s multiplayer take on God of War and an unnamed project at Bend Studio.
The company also struggled in mobile gaming. It closed down its Neon Koi studio in mobile games last year.
Apart from Helldivers 2’s triumph in the past, Sony’s attempts to push live services and mobile gaming haven’t met expectations.
As making games becomes more expensive and console sales drop, PlayStation is trying to find different ways to expand the company. Although its recent plans haven’t worked well.
It is worth mentioning that the canceled Horizon MMO game is not connected to Guerrilla Games’ online Horizon multiplayer game, which they’re currently working on.
