Thailand plans to launch its cryptocurrency sandbox by the end of this year. Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said the sandbox is likely to be in Phuket and run from October. He said the move would be a turning point for the country and the rest of the crypto industry.

Shinawatra said Thailand is better equipped than other countries in the region to welcome cryptocurrency. The country is well prepared and has all the resources it needs to move forward in the crypto space. Other nations in the region are also keen on cooperating with Thailand on this issue. Shinawatra sees this as a chance to create money for the economic system and enhance Thailand’s position in the global market.

Shinawatra also stressed that it is crucially important to start immediately using cryptocurrency. The warnings came that delays could see the best minds in the sector drift to the United States. He also clarified that cryptocurrency and gambling are not the same. Instead, consider it a new form of currency backed by things such as gold or government bonds. He stressed that Thailand would concentrate on stablecoins because they involve less risk than other digital currencies.

Phuket’s cryptocurrency sandbox is also expected to be private sector-run. The idea is to create a controlled environment for businesses and consumers to get a live experience. This will also enable regulators to keep a close watch on the situation. Shinawatra had promised to use Phuket as a Bitcoin tourism sandbox. He proposed that digital currency holders should be enticed to spend their digital assets when they visit the country.

Nirun Fuwattananukul, CEO of Gulf Binance, positively received the idea. The project could enhance Thailand’s competitiveness and attract tech savvy holidaymakers, he believed.
