Toyota inaugurates the AI city of the future: Woven City

Toyota is preparing to open Woven City, a futuristic city powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. Located at the foot of Mount Fuji, it will be a living laboratory for testing advanced technologies and sustainable solutions.

Toyota’s vision: an experimental city based on AI to accelerate technological innovation

The Japanese car manufacturer Toyota is ready to inaugurate this year Woven City, an experimental city destined to become a center of technological innovation without precedent. 

Located at the foot of Mount Fuji, this futuristic community will not only be a residential settlement but a true living laboratory. 

In particular, advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous vehicles, and smart homes will be developed and tested here.

First presented five years ago by the president of Toyota, Akio Toyoda, the Woven City project represents a concrete example of the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. 

The city will begin to welcome the first 100 residents by the end of the year, a group composed mainly of Toyota employees and their families. 

In the company’s plans, the population of the city will be gradually expanded to reach approximately 2,000 people in the initial phases.

Toyoda, speaking during the CES in Las Vegas, emphasized that the main goal of the project is to accelerate the development of new technologies in a real-world context:

“At Woven City, we want to rapidly test innovative solutions that could revolutionize our way of living.” 

Cutting-edge technologies in a unique ecosystem

Woven City will be a showcase for cutting-edge technologies integrated into every aspect of daily life. 

From self-driving cars to smart homes, through sustainable energy solutions, the city represents an ideal microcosm for testing and perfecting innovations that could be applied on a global scale.

A key element of the project is the Arene software platform, an operating system developed by Toyota to optimize the development and management of vehicles. 

This software, which will be implemented in the new electric vehicles starting from 2026, promises to reduce costs and accelerate the process of innovation in the automotive industry.

Despite the great ambitions, the Woven City project is not without challenges. According to Toyoda, the city might not be economically profitable in the early years, but the value of the project lies in its ability to generate positive impacts for the global society.

“As citizens of the world, we have the responsibility to invest in our collective future.”

However, the CEO of Woven, Hajime Kumabe, expressed confidence in the economic sustainability of the project. 

Specifically stating that the innovation derived from the experimental city will positively influence Toyota’s automotive production, generating long-term value.

Sustainability and social innovation

The completion of the first phase of construction in October 2024 marks an important milestone for the project. Although the city will not be open to the public for at least two years, Woven City already stands as a symbol of what the future might hold.

With the inauguration of Woven City, Toyota demonstrates that it is more than just a car manufacturer, transforming into a catalyst for technological and social change.
