Following re-elected US President Donald Trump’s promises to create a national Bitcoin (BTC) reserve, governments and states’ interest in Bitcoin has increased.
At this point, while many countries and corporate companies are turning to BTC, the latest news came from the canton of Bern in Switzerland.
The parliament of the Swiss canton of Bern has approved a proposal to prepare a report on Bitcoin mining, local news agency Blocktrainer reported.
The Government Council, the executive body of the canton, expressed its opposition to Bitcoin mining and the preparation of a report on this issue, but the proposal was accepted despite this.
While Bitcoin supporters are calling this a victory, the proposal to prepare the report was submitted by the 23-member multi-party Bitcoin Parliamentary Group.
The report will explore and address issues such as where the excess energy needed for Bitcoin mining in the canton could be obtained, potential cooperation with Swiss Bitcoin miners, and the potential of Bitcoin mining to stabilize the power grid.
The group that presented the proposal pointed to the US state of Texas as a potential model for integrating Bitcoin mining into the system, stating that the canton could attract mining companies and jobs to the region by encouraging Bitcoin mining, as well as promoting renewable energy.
“The government council adopted a proposal to prepare a report analyzing the potential of Bitcoin mining for the canton of Bern.
The primary objectives of the report are to: 1. Show where energy remains unused in electricity generation in the canton of Bern 2. How unused energy can be used through Bitcoin mining 3. Show whether and how Bitcoin mining can help stabilize the power grid.”
