Polygon’s Plonky3 Breakthrough: Achieving Over 2 Million Poseidon2 Hash Operations Per Second

On October 31, a significant announcement emerged from the Polygon Zero team, with developer Daniel Lubarov revealing on the X platform a landmark advancement in their zero-knowledge proof system, Plonky3. The system now boasts the capability to execute over 2 million Poseidon2 hash operations per second, marking a substantial enhancement attributed to refined memory optimization. This includes critical technical enhancements aimed at minimizing data redundancy, eliminating unnecessary zeroing processes, and streamlining Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) steps. Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin acknowledged this development, noting that the impressive processing speed translates to the potential completion of Ethereum’s theoretical maximum consensus state rehashing within a single time slot, estimated at 62MB of Merkle operations per second. Sandeep, co-founder of Polygon, expressed gratitude to Buterin for this recognition, reinforcing a commitment to advancing technological innovation in the blockchain space.
