EigenLayer X Account Compromised in Phishing Attack
On October 18, the EigenLayer X account posted a fake airdrop campaign, leading users to a phishing link disguised as part of EigenLayer’s official recovery protocol. Scam Sniffer has urged users to avoid interacting with these fraudulent links.
The fake post, which falsely claimed to offer rewards to users eligible for a previous campaign, was deleted shortly after gaining significant traction. While the quick deletion suggested that the hacker may have lost access to the EigenLayer X account, new fake airdrop posts have continued to surface.
The phishing attempt stands out for its sophisticated methods. The link appears legitimate because X’s platform displays a preview image from EigenLayer‘s actual website, complete with a URL to its official blog. This visual trick can easily deceive users into believing the link is safe.
According to Scam Sniffer, an individual reportedly lost $800,000 in mETH after signing a malicious “permit” phishing signature, likely triggered by clicking the link in the compromised post.
Rising Trend of Social Media Hacks Threatens Blockchain Community
The on-chain analyst, ZachXBT, has also issued a note of caution, advising users not to interact with any dubious links associated with the hacked account. Considering EigenLayer’s popularity, it is safe to assume that the phishing attempt may have had several other victims in its wake.
The breach is yet another instance in the growing list of social media hack attacks fringing on blockchain projects. In recent weeks, Geeks and Discord have been compromised several times by criminals who hacked in to advance their fraudulent schemes. Earlier this year, the X account of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, was also targeted and hacked.
