Ryan Salame, former co-CEO of FTX Digital Markets was given hours to report to prison on Friday after District Judge Lewis Kaplan denied his request to begin serving his sentence on Dec. 7 rather than in October.
Salame (31) had asked for more time to receive medical treatment, stating that he is still recovering from an injury received from a dog bite in June. When he first asked for a postponement in July, the request was granted, initially delaying Salame’s scheduled surrender.
In his recent ruling Judge Kaplan noted that Salame had benefited “from extremely generous postponements.” He also questioned the veracity of prior statements made by Salame who helped run FTX with Sam Bankman-Fried.
The court noted that the surgery Salame says he needed for the dog bite “seems largely cosmetic and nonurgent,” they also noted that he looked “unimpaired” during a recent interview with independent news personality Tucker Carlson. The interview was posted last Thursday but may have been recorded earlier. In it, Salame discussed topics like fighting the Feds for pursuing his romantic partner— crypto lobbyist Michelle Bond.
Ultimately Judge Kaplan ruled that Salame must surrender to the Bureau of Prisons no later than 2pm ET on Friday the 11th . At the time of writing Salame is now a permanent resident of the FCI Cumberland prison in Maryland where he is serving a 7.5 year sentence along with 1011 other prisoners. FCI Cumberland is a medium security federal correctional institution with an adjacent minimum security satellite camp. Salame’s prison number is 76655-510.
