Ubisoft, a prominent video game developer known for its diverse portfolio of games, is set to release Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, its first-ever Web3-enabled game, on October 23rd on the Oasys Layer-2 blockchain network, HOME Verse.

According to Ubisoft, Champions Tactics is a tactical role-playing game (RPG) that takes advantage of Web3 technology to allow players to collect and customize digital Champions. It doesn’t end there as players will also be able to engage in intense player-versus-player (PvP) battles by introducing them to the dark and mystical world of Grimoria, where strategy, skill, and creativity will be crucial to success.

In a statement, Ubisoft’s Nicolas Pouard highlighted how Web3 technology is bound to improve the gaming experience. “At Ubisoft Strategic Innovation Lab, our focus is on delivering gameplay where the Web3 aspect seamlessly integrates into the background. We want players to fully immerse themselves in the fun and strategy of the game,” said Nicolas Pouard, VP of the Ubisoft Lab. He also emphasized that the game’s true aim is to amplify the joy of play, with blockchain as an empowering tool for players rather than a distraction.

The game has a key and standout feature: a collection of 75,000 unique Champions, from which players are expected to choose three Champions that they will use to dominate the other players. Note that each champion comes with special traits and abilities. This feature, together with Forge infused in the game’s system, goes a long way to help the players blend traits from different Champions and, as a result, develop stronger and more strategic characters that help stay at the top.

Ubisoft partnered with Oasys, a game-optimized blockchain, and leveraged its Layer-2 HOME Verse to ensure the game’s blockchain is optimized for a smooth and enjoyable experience. Oasys was chosen since its network is tailored for gaming, making it ideal – fast transactions and zero gas fees – for an interactive and fast-paced game like the Champions Tactics.

Ryo Matsubara, representative director at Oasys, commented on the partnership, saying, “We are thrilled that Ubisoft has chosen HOME Verse to launch their first Web3 game. The success of The Warlords and Champions mint this year shows the enthusiasm surrounding Champions Tactics, and we are confident this launch will set a new standard for blockchain-based gaming.”

The anticipation for Champions Tactics has grown steadily since Ubisoft first announced the game at IVS Kyoto nearly a year ago. Recently, the company released The Warlords, a 10K Profile Picture (PFP) collection, which was the most hyped mint of Q3 2023. The subsequent Champions Mint in July 2024 also broke records, boosting excitement. As of today, the Champions Tactics community has over 100K followers on X and 50K members on Discord who are eager to explore the game.

Sylvain Loe-Mie, the executive producer of Champions Tactics, emphasized that the game is on the move to be an immersive experience rather than a finance-driven project. “This is not a GameFi product,” Loe-Mie stated. “We want to create a true gaming experience that draws in players and gives them the freedom to own and evolve their assets. Our team has decades of experience from working on games like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, and we’re applying that expertise to this project.”

By launching Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, Ubisoft is not only embracing Web3 technology but also pioneering a new era of gaming where immersive experiences meet digital ownership. With the backing of Oasys’ robust blockchain infrastructure, it is a no-brainer that Ubisoft is on a mission to rewrite the rules of engagement in blockchain gaming.
