An upcoming HBO documentary promising new details about the real identity of the enigmatic, fabled Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto has caused an online stir, with crypto community members excitedly speculating over who the film might claim created the world’s largest and oldest cryptocurrency.
Famous documentary filmmaker Cullen Hoback, who unveiled the person behind the QAnon Conspiracy Theory that dominated 4chan during the 2016 election, promises to name who Satoshi is next Wednesday.
The Face Behind Bitcoin To Be Finally Unveiled?
In his latest endeavor, American Emmy-nominated producer Cullen Hoback is set to release a documentary investigating the origins of Bitcoin (BTC). “MoneyElectric: The Bitcoin Mystery” is slated to premiere on HBO on October 8. Based on the trailer, the documentary features what seems like an attempt to uncover the still-controversial question of who really invented Bitcoin and its underlying technology.
“A few of you might have wondered why I disappeared. Well, I was tracking down someone else who disappeared. Curious who’s behind Bitcoin? MoneyElectric: The Bitcoin Mystery drops next Tuesday. It’s going to be a rollercoaster,” Hoback wrote on X.
The documentary also features interviews with renowned crypto industry personalities such as British cypherpunk and cryptographer Adam Back and Jan3 CEO Samson Mow.

The identity of Satoshi remains unknown despite numerous attempts to unmask the highly elusive creator of the OG cryptocurrency over the years. At one point, Australian computer scientist Craig Wright claimed to be the pseudonymous founder of the Bitcoin network. But he has since recanted his claims of being Satoshi following a March ruling from the United Kingdom’s High Court.
Now, Galaxy’s head of research, Alex Thorn, has revealed that he heard that the forthcoming HBO documentary tags Len Sassaman as Satoshi.
Sassaman contributed to the mailing list where Satoshi first announced Bitcoin and worked alongside cryptographer and software developer Hal Finney. Adding to the speculation that Sassaman is indeed the Bitcoin creator is the timing of their respective disappearances. Sassaman committed suicide in July 2011 shortly after Satoshi ceased posting on the bitcointalk.org forum.
While the anticipated demystification of Satoshi might be nothing more than fanfare, if Hoback indeed succeeds in identifying once and for all the true identity of the Bitcoin inventor Satoshi Nakamoto, the implications could trickle throughout the whole financial world.
It’s worth mentioning that wallets linked to Satoshi still hold a vast 1.1 million BTC (worth roughly $67.4 billion at current prices) fortune that remains untouched to this day.
