On September 28, Ethereum community member Ryan Berckmans offered a counterpoint to Multicoin partner Kyle’s assertion at TOKEN2049 that Solana will eclipse Ethereum. Berckmans asserted that Solana will not surpass Ethereum, emphasizing that it is already at its zenith in the current cycle. He predicts that future Layer 2 (L2) solutions will outpace Solana in terms of speed, rendering Solana’s current advantages in speed and cost obsolete. He called the L2 model a breakthrough that scales effectively within real-world use cases while significantly enhancing the value of ETH.
Berckmans criticized Kyle’s portrayal of Solana’s strengths as either exaggerated or unfounded, neglecting to mention Solana’s structural drawbacks, such as overselling its capacity. He noted that while Solana claims to offer 50,000 transactions per second (TPS), it realistically achieves around 1.1k TPS. According to Berckmans, Solana’s actual advantage lies in using centralization and vertical integration to accelerate its growth. While it currently exhibits more aggressiveness and curiosity in the application layer, such as decentralized infrastructure and consumer encryption, this may not be sustainable compared to Ethereum’s more decentralized approach.
