Vitalik Buterin Discusses Future Ethereum Optimization Priorities and Rollup-Centric Roadmap

On September 22, COINOTAG reported that Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin addressed comments from Bankless founder David Hoffman regarding the completion of the “rollup-centric roadmap” and future optimization focusing on Layer 1 (L1) protocols. Buterin noted, “I don’t think this is a priority issue. The next step for Data Availability (DA) is peer-to-peer networking (peerdas), and those dedicated to it are distinct from teams focusing on SSF or EVM execution improvements. Declaring the rollup roadmap as complete is premature; we are merely 1.3 times the usage peak away from full blob data capacity (21,600 blobs/day). We need to initiate peerdas and cautiously expand while enhancing L1.”

Hoffman questioned if increasing L1 blocktimes would augment blobspace supply, suggesting that focusing on L1 differs from simultaneous L1 and L2 focus, positing potential benefits for Layer 2 (L2). Buterin elaborated, “If slot times are reduced without altering other variables, the answer is yes. But bandwidth constraints dictate the limits of both. Therefore, acceptance of current gas/blob limits translates to contentment with direct limits. Bandwidth and latency should be considered separately. Reducing L1 slot time warrants discussion but must avoid adverse impacts on independent or geographically dispersed stakers.”
