Billionaire’s top 10 stock picks

Warren Buffett, the famed ‘Oracle of Omaha,’ allegedly made his first stock pick at age 11, all the way back in the early 1940s. In the following 80-odd years, he first became a millionaire, then a billionaire, and has perfected the art of getting rich slowly.

Though Buffett generally recommends simply investing in an S&P 500 index fund, he has himself made many specific and carefully considered trades, with perhaps the most successful one of recent years being his 2016 purchase of Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) shares.

Despite his age and historical success, Warren Buffett remains an active investor and with the recent publishing of his most recent 13-f, the filing that reveals the billionaire’s portfolio as of the end of the second quarter of 2024, Finbold decided to examine the investor’s top 10 holdings.

Warren Buffett’s top 10 stocks revealed

Warren Buffett’s portfolio remains highly diversified, with as many as 41 different stocks owned. His top 10 holdings, however, reveal a continued preference for food, medical, financial sector, and technology blue chips.

Indeed, despite selling a staggering 389 million Apple shares – nearly half of the position –  the big tech firm remains ‘The Oracle of Omaha’s’ biggest holding as it represents as much as 30% of the total portfolio.

The financial sector is also prominently represented in the filing, and together, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC), American Express (NYSE: AXP), Moody’s (NYSE: MCO), and Chubb Limited (NYSE: CB) – a major global insurance company –  account for 34.2% of the portfolio.

Major oil companies are also still apparently favored in the Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A, BRK.B) trading strategy, as Chevron (NYSE: CVX) and Occidental Petroleum (NYSE: OXY) represent 12.3% of the holdings.

It is worth pointing out, however, that between the first and second quarter of 2024, Buffett sold just over 4 million CVX shares and purchased nearly 7.3 million OXY shares.

Food and beverage blue chips, Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO), and Kraft Heinz (NASDAQ: KHC), hold the fourth and seventh spots, respectively, among Berkshire Hathaway’s largest positions and combined account for 12.8% of the portfolio.

Warren Buffett is also significantly invested in the healthcare sector as he owns 36 million Davita (NYSE: DVA) shares, worth some $5 billion at the end of the second quarter – 1.8% of the entire portfolio.

Finally, though every update of ‘Oracle of Omaha’s’ portfolio is exciting and holds the potential for important stock market insights, the forthcoming Q3 13-f is likely to be uncharacteristically eventful as the massive sale of Apple stock has given Buffett the cash reserves needed to alter his holdings radically.
