Crypto Whale Lost $55M Worth DAI To A Phishing Attack

  • A whale address lost 55.47 million DAI stablecoins.
  • CertiK Alert observed the attacker had accessed externally owned accounts (EOA) using Inferno Drainer.

A crypto whale has fallen victim to a phishing attack, losing a substantial 55.47 million DAI tokens ($55M) after negligently signing a fraudulent transaction. According to the on-chain data, the funds were stored in the vault of Maker, a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol built on Ethereum.

However, the ownership of these funds was altered, allowing the attacker to steal the stablecoins in the wallet after signing the unknown transaction. Reportedly, when the whale tried to withdraw the funds, the transaction failed due to a change in ownership through the hack.

Besides, the hacker has moved the stolen DAI tokens to a new address and withdrawn the assets. Later, he exchanged 27.5 million DAI for approximately 10,625 ETH, currently worth $27.44 million. Later, he moved most of the funds to a trading protocol called CoW.

Meanwhile, security platform CertiK reported that the attacker had accessed externally owned accounts (EOA) using Inferno Drainer.

Certik further added that the attacker exploited the EOA to transfer the ownership of the user’s DSProxy (decentralized service proxy) #166,776 to a new address under the attackers control. A DSProxy is a smart contract that enables users to enable multiple contract calls within a single transaction. Notably, the attack took place on Tuesday, 05:40:47 PM UTC.

At the time of writing, DAI was trading at $0.9999. The market cap of the asset stands at $5.36 billion, as per CMC data.
