Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, announced its decision to close its operations in Brazil due to what it described as “censorship orders” from Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
The company claims that Moraes secretly threatened to arrest one of its legal representatives in Brazil if the platform did not comply with orders to remove certain content. Despite the closure of its local operations, X remains accessible to users in Brazil.
Elon Musk X Brazil Exit Due to Legal Disputes
X, formerly known as Twitter, revealed on Saturday that it is ceasing its operations in Brazil, effective immediately. The decision comes in response to actions taken by Alexandre de Moraes, a justice on Brazil’s Supreme Court.
According to Elon Musk, Moraes issued secret orders demanding the removal of content from the platform and threatened the company’s legal representative with arrest if they failed to comply.
Due to demands by “Justice” @Alexandre in Brazil that would require us to break (in secret) Brazilian, Argentinian, American and international law, 𝕏 has no choice but to close our local operations in Brazil.
He is an utter disgrace to justice. https://t.co/yAvX1TpuRp

The platform stated that despite numerous appeals to Brazil’s Supreme Court, its requests were not heard. X also emphasized that its Brazilian staff had no responsibility or control over the content in question, yet were still threatened. This situation led to the decision to protect its employees by shutting down its operations in the country.
