“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will be off air until at least next week as its host recovers from surgery after rupturing his appendix.

Colbert’s announcement of the cancellation, posted to social media Monday, did not mention if those guests would have their appearances rescheduled.
The cancellation is the second time Colbert has missed episodes due to a medical cause in as many months—several episodes were mixed in October after the host tested positive for Covid-19.
Colbert did not specify exactly when “The Late Show” would be back, saying only that he was canceling “our shows this week.”

Colbert replaced David Letterman as the host of “The Late Show” in September of 2015, almost a year after leaving his nine-year run as host of “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central. Colbert is one of four men to still host traditional late-night talk shows on ABC, CBS and NBC, which have been falling in viewership since their heyday in the 1990s. Late night staples like Conan O’Brien and James Corden have left their posts in recent years and not been replaced. Colbert earlier this month announced that Corden’s show will have its slot after his show filled by a new one called “@midnight,” to be hosted by comedian Taylor Tomlinson.
