Indian star Salman Khan’s latest outing Tiger 3 has scored more than $50 million in 15 days at the ticket windows across the globe. Directed by Maneesh Sharma, the film also featured Katrina Kaif and Emraan Hashmi. According to the producers Yash Raj Films (YRF), the movie has grossed $53.8 million globally while it has made gross earning of $39.6 million in India.
Producers of Tiger 3 have announced special discount for moviegoers in the new week – the films’ third week at the ticket windows. Tickets for the movie can be bought for $1.8 in select cinemas, across all languages (in Hindi, English, Telugu and Tamil). The offer is valid from November 27 to November 30.
Tiger 3 is the fifth movie in producers Yash Raj Films’ ‘spy-universe’. Apart from Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff’s War and Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, the previous two films of Salman Khan’s Tiger franchise Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai are also part of the new spy-universe. Tiger 3 continues to be the lowest earning movie in the spy-universe, but it may cross the India collections for the 2017 movie Tiger Zinda Hai soon.
Nonetheless, Tiger 3 managed to rank among the world’s top grossing films consecutively for two weeks and also broke a few records in its first week. It made a global gross opening collection of $11.3 million and became the highest-ever opening film for the lead actor (Salman Khan). The score also made Tiger the third best-opening Hindi movie of 2023.
Tiger 3 was ranked eighth on Comscore’s list of top grossing movies for the weekend ending November 12 with an opening collection of $2.25 million in the USA. The film also made to the fourth slot on Comscore’s list of world’s highest-earning movie.
In the second weekend of its release, Tiger 3 earned $9.62 million and Comscore ranked the film seventh in a list for worldwide top-grossing films over the weekend ending November 19. In the US markets alone, Tiger 3 earned a little more than $1 million over that weekend, and was ranked at the eleventh spot for top-grossing films in the US.
The movie had an unusual release – on a Sunday instead of the usual Friday. It released across 9000 screens all over the world on November 12. It was the same day when India celebrated the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali. The film released in various languages including Telugu, Hindi, and Tamil.
Salman Khan returns as the Indian spy Avinash Singh Rathore aka Tiger in Tiger 3 while Kaif also returns as Pakistani spy Zoya. The new film marks the entry of Emraan Hashmi in the Tiger franchise, as well as YRF’s ‘spy-universe’. Hashmi essays the role of Kaif’s boss in the film – a former ISI agent Aatish Rehman. Late Girish Karnad earlier played the role of Khan’s boss in the film. The new film acknowledges his death. Revathy takes the mantle of that role with Tiger 3. Karnad died in 2019.
Written by Sridhar Raghavan, the film follows the Indian spy as he embarks on a new mission outside his home country. While the spies remain in their characters, their latest mission involves not just their own country. He is expected to save his wife and their son. Tiger even takes upon the responsibility of helping the neighbouring nation. Fans of the franchise and Khan have been disappointed with a lack of rationality in the storyline but the film was received warmly by the single-screen theatre-audience across India. Special camoes by Hrithik Roshan (in his character from War) and Shah Rukh Khan (as Pathaan from the movie Pathaan) added to the film’s apppeal.
