Sony Announced Postponement of 6 Out of 12 Live Service Games

Sony is one of the gaming giants whose products are highly anticipated among gamers. When such a company announces a delay of some games, it creates ripples in the industry. That’s exactly what happened when Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) made its recent announcement.

Sony Delays Half-A-Dozen Games

It seemed that the company indicated a significant change in its product development strategy. Notably, the team made this decision after a review and collaboration meeting with Destiny studio Bungie. This gave the idea to many that Sony was probably not happy with the work done by Bungie. Because they originally decided to design and launch 12 planned live service games.

Sony has felt that it’s not possible to deliver 12 full-fledged games in the next 3 years. However, the company’s management has started a stringent portfolio review in collaboration with Bungie. Reportedly, the review process flagged some concerns about the quality of games.

It is most likely the reason behind this holdup. So, while the news might disappoint some gamers, it’s reassuring that the company is concerned about the experience.

What’s the Release Date Now?

Sony’s President, COO, and CFO, Hiroki Totoki disclosed the revised timeline during an earnings call. He said that the company had decided to launch 6 games by the end of fiscal year 2025. Nonetheless, what happens with the remaining 6 is still unclear. So far, the team has only made one thing clear they will not compromise with the quality. Since gaming is a highly competitive sphere, this decision makes so much sense.

Much-Awaited Titles in Development

Among those 12 titles, the following are highly anticipated among gamers.

The Last of Us– This online game has caught the attention of many gamers especially after it was adapted in a TV series. It is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the main characters are trying their best to beat the odds to survive.

Horizon– Horizon is already a very popular series of action role-playing games. The newest edition is expected to come with some new and exciting features.

Original IP– PlayStation London Studio announced this game a while back. Since then, gamers have been excited to know more about it.

The Role of Bungie

According to Sony, Bungie has played an instrumental role in several areas. It has streamlined the development of live service games and all their facets. PlayStation Studios Head Hermen Hulst said that Bungie’s insight has helped them create marvelous editions. They have improved the development of narrative-driven games, service titles, unique capabilities, single-player features, etc.

With Bungie’s involvement, Sony has been able to gain a deep understanding of the live service sphere. Unlike regular games, live service editions continuously evolve and require consistent attention from developers. Bungie has helped PlayStation master that realm, he said.

Probable Outcomes of Review Process

Sony will review these 12 before launch to ensure the quality. However, it’s not clear if they’ll follow the same process for other games too. Bungie will be an indispensable part of this procedure. According to the company, it will ensure that only the best comes out of Sony. Furthermore, it shows the PlayStation’s commitment to live service games.
