Matt LaFleur and the Green Bay Packers are in the midst of a disappointing season.
The Green Bay Packers lost for the fifth time in six games Sunday, dropping a 23-19 decision to Pittsburgh.
In one way, though, the Packers were winners.
Green Bay climbed to No. 6 in the current 2024 NFL draft order. And with the Packers’ next three foes posting a combined 18-9 record (.667), Green Bay might keep on climbing up this chart.
“I mean it’s tough, for sure,” Green Bay wide receiver Christian Watson said. “Obviously close isn’t close enough. It’s definitely tough, but there’s nothing we can do about it after it’s already happened, so we’ve just got to find a way to build and grow from it.”
The Packers have the youngest roster in football. And the best way to grow it might be by landing a top pick in the upcoming draft.
The last time the Packers had a pick higher than No. 6 was in 2006, when they used the fifth overall selection on linebacker A.J. Hawk.
Green Bay also has two second and two third round picks in the upcoming draft, meaning it will have five of the top-100 picks. If general manager Brian Gutekunst can hit on at least three of those selections, the Packers could start turning things around quickly.
“Everybody’s frustrated and they should be,” Gutekunst said recently. “We expected to perform better and the frustration level, I think throughout the building is there, but at the same time, I think we believe in the process that we’re doing, so you just kind of focus on that.
“Again, I think everybody’s really got to focus in on doing their job and doing their job just a little bit better and we’ll get to where we need to go, but it’s no fun to be in the situation we’re in. But again, the belief in the people in that room — the locker room, the coaching staff and everybody in this building — is there.”
Here’s a look at how the draft order currently stands:
1. Chicago (via Carolina – 1-8)
2. New York Giants (2-8)
3. New England (2-8)
4. Arizona (2-8)
5. Chicago (3-7)
6. Green Bay (3-6)
7. Los Angeles Rams (3-6)
8. Tennessee (3-6)
9. Denver (3-5)
10. Atlanta (4-6)
