FTX’s Former General Leads Backpack Exchange Launch: Report

  • The former executive team of FTX has disclosed the launch of Backpack Exchange.
  • The project that intends to solve the issues that caused the FTX fall is led by FTX’s former general, Can Sun.
  • Other members include Backpack CEO Armani Ferrante, his wife Claire Zhang, and Sun’s former legal deputy.

According to a recent report published by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), a team of former executives of the ruined FTX is venturing toward launching a new crypto firm, Backpack Exchange. The team led by Can Sun, FTX’s former general who testified against FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried at his trial, envisions addressing and solving the issues that became the sole cause of FTX’s fall.

Chinese crypto reporter Colin Wu, on his X page titled Wu Blockchain, wrote about the team’s vision of establishing the new crypto firm, Trek Labs Ltd FZE, which will be launched under the name Backpack Exchange. At the end of October, the team announced their new journey while Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) issued the Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license.

Last month, Backpack Founder and CEO Armani Ferrante unveiled that the platform would be hailed as “X”, which stands for “eXchange” or the “Backpack Exchange”. He added via a tweet that the project is “the hardest yet most important project” the team has yet handled.

As per Ferrante’s words, Backpack Exchange will utilize Backpack’s technology to enable customers to keep their funds safe in their “self-custody”, avoiding further complications regarding customer assets. Ferrante cited,

It’s time to put an end to the days of opaque crypto exchanges representing everything our industry stands against,” he said in a statement. “It shouldn’t be normal to use an exchange with a single point of failure, without proof of reserves, or without auditability.

While Ferrante declared the establishment of Backpack Exchange, the substantial role of Sun remained undisclosed. Other major figures involved in the executive board of the company include Ferrente’s wife, Claire Zhang, and Sun’s former legal deputy.
