Bitcoin ETF Approval Prospects Brighten: Insights from Bitwise’s CIO

Matt Hougan, the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) at Bitwise Asset Management, recently opened up about the positive signs for a Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) approval and a notable change in the attitude of traditional financial institutions towards cryptocurrencies.

In an interview with Thinking Crypto, he pointed out that the news of a potential spot Bitcoin ETF approval positively impacted the market. He said the market had not entirely accepted the possibility of a spot Bitcoin ETF yet, but the recent developments indicated a path towards this significant milestone.

Hougan expressed confidence that the approval of a Bitcoin ETF would benefit the market both in the short and long term. He viewed it as a promising step, even though he wished the earlier fake news incident had not occurred.

The conversation then shifted to the comments by Larry Fink, the CEO of BlackRock, one of the world’s largest asset management firms. Fink’s recent statement that Bitcoin might be considered a “flight to quality” asset had left Hougan amazed. He highlighted the importance of this shift in stance by BlackRock, indicating a broader change in traditional finance’s attitude toward cryptocurrencies.

Discussing the challenges related to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Bitcoin ETF approvals, Hougan took a unique stance. He pointed out that various commissions had reviewed spot Bitcoin ETFs and crypto ETFs in the past, but none had been approved under the current SEC. Despite the slow progress, Hougan credited the SEC for opening the door to ETFs in the crypto industry.

He said, “So even though this SEC has been much slower than we want, and even though I think they should have approved a spot Bitcoin ETF years ago, I think we have to give them credit for opening the door to ETFs in crypto land. And I feel a high degree of confidence that it’s going to open wider.”
