Upbit experienced around 160,000 hacking attempts in the first half of 2023 alone, according to data from operator Dunamu submitted to the National Assembly. The figure was 2.17 times the number in H1 2022. Following a 2019 hack that caused ₩58bn ($49m) damage, Dunamu had upped the proportion of cold wallets it uses to over 70% and had also started using hot wallets in multiple structures rather than a single structure. However, Rep. Park Seong-jung said the Ministry of Science and ICT’s role in supervising them was “ambiguous”.
