Tom Hanks, Others Decry AI-Generated Videos of Self

The news of the deep fake videos comes as the daughter of late comedian Robin Williams expressed her displeasure at AI-generated recreations of her father’s voice.

Actor Tom Hanks has publicly denounced a deep fake video of himself promoting a dental plan. Hanks took to Instagram to warn his 9.5 million Instagram followers not to fall for the advert. Hank said:

“There’s a video out there promoting some dental plan with an AI version of me. I have nothing to do with it.”

Hanks has been vocal about the use of AI in the entertainment industry. The Hollywood star alluded to the technology being unstoppable while speaking on The Adam Buxton Podcast. Thanks to his digital avatar from the 2004 film “The Polar Express”, Hanks believes his career could continue indefinitely even if he gets hit by a bus.

“Outside the understanding of AI and deepfake, there’ll be nothing to tell you that it’s not me and me alone,” he noted.

Deep Fake Videos Making the Rounds

Meanwhile, Hanks is not the only celebrity to have decried the use of deep fake videos. Revered actors Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves have also been subjects of unauthorized deep fakes.

More recently, American broadcast journalist Gayle King denounced an AI deep fake of her promoting a product. King noted that she wasn’t aware of the product nor did she endorse it, warning her community not to fall victim. Further, she wrote, “…they’ve manipulated my voice and video to make it seem like I’m promoting it.”

Again, YouTube personality James Donaldson denounced any affiliation with an AI-generated deep fake video of himself. The video shows Donaldson promoting a scam to win an iPhone 15 pro. Donaldson called into question the ability of social media platforms to manage AI-deep fake cases.

“Are social media platforms ready to handle the rise of AI deep fakes? This is a serious problem,” he concluded.

Zelda Williams: AI-generated Recreations Could be Frankensteinian Monsters

The news of the deep fake videos comes as the daughter of late comedian Robin Williams expressed her displeasure at AI-generated recreations of her father’s voice.

Zelda Williams noted that she found it “personally disturbing”. At best, Williams believes the AI creations are “a poor facsimile of greater people”. At their worst, she called it “a horrendous Frankensteinian monster cobbled together from the worst bits of everything this industry is”.
