‘Gadar 2’ Scores New Record, ‘Jawan’ Breaks It In A Day

Indian star Shah Rukh Khan’s new film Jawan has created yet another record at the box office as it completes three weeks at the ticket windows. It has made nett collections of $63.3 million in India to become the top earning Hindi film ever in the country.

Interestingly, it was just a day earlier that Sunny Deol-starrer Gadar 2 made nett collections of $63.2 million in India to become the top scoring Hindi film in India. A day later, Khan’s film Jawan managed to topple Anil Sharma’s sequel to his own 2001 film from the top slot.

Directed by Atlee, Jawan grossed roughly $125.2 million globally and $70.5 million in the Indian markets, as per a claim by producers Red Chillies Entertainment. It crossed the $100 million-mark globally in 13 days since the initial release on September 7. In the US markets alone, the film has crossed $90 million. Comscore placed Jawan at the third slot on its list of world’s top grossers over the weekend ending September 17 – the second weekend for Jawan. The new film also ranked in the top five highest-grosssing films worldwide for that weekend.

In the first weekend of its release, Jawan toppled two Hollywood biggies in the home turf and pushed Barbie and Oppenheimer down on Comscore’s
SCOR
. It was the fourth-highest-grossing film for the weekend ending September 10 in the US markets and crossed $5 million in the US alone.

As the craze around the film begins to die down with time, the producers have come up with an offer for the fans. Red Chillies Entertainment announced one free ticket for every ticket purchased for the Jawan across several cinemas in India. The offer begins from the film’s fourth week at the ticket windows.

Jawan features Tamil star Vijay Sethupathi (of Vikram Vedha, Master fame) in the role of the main villain while Deepika Padukone (of XXX: The Return of Xander Cage fame) essays the role of a mom to one of Khan’s characters while she plays the wife to the other character. South Indian star Nayanthara makes her Bollywood debut with the film as a top cop.

Sanjay Dutt (of Agneepath, Khalnayak fame) has a special cameo in an interesting part of the film. Ridhi Dogra, Sunil Grover, and Sanya Malhotra, apart from a few other popular Hindi film actors also play major parts in the film.

Deol returned with a sequel to his 2001 film Gadar Ek Prem Katha in August this year and broke several box office records at the box office in India. The Hindi film, Gadar 2, has now crossed yet another milestone and created a new record. With $63.2 million nett collections in India, Gadar 2 became the top earning Hindi film ever (India nett collections). However, it stayed briefly on the top slot, and a day later, it was toppled by Jawan.

Meanwhile, Khan also made it to the top of IMDb’s Popular Indian Celebrities list. Kareena Kapoor Khan ranks second. Jawan stars Nayanthara and Ridhi Dogra also made it to the third and fourth slots respectively. The film’s director, Atlee was placed at the fifth spot, followed by Jaideep Ahlawat and Deepika Padukone on sixth and seventh spots. As per IMDb, the list is “based on more than 200 million monthly visits to IMDb worldwide”.
