Topline
Sophie Turner sued Joe Jonas on Thursday amid the couple’s divorce for their two children to be returned to England, where Turner said they’ve been living for months, according to court documents.
Key Facts
In Turner’s filing, she said the children are “fully involved and integrated in all aspects of daily and cultural life in England,” where they’ve been residing in a rental home since April while in the process of purchasing a house there—despite Jonas saying they had been living in Miami and traveling with him.
The suit claims Jonas and Turner agreed the children would return to their home in England on September 20, but that Jonas has their passports and has said he “will not consent for them” to return to England.
Jonas filed court papers earlier this month saying the couple’s marriage was “irretrievably broken,” and asked the court to determine a parenting plan that gives the couple “shared parental responsibility” and the children “frequent and continuing contact” with both parents.
Earlier this month, Jonas and Turner confirmed the reports on Instagram, saying they “decided to amicably end our marriage.”
A spokesperson for Jonas said in a statement to Forbes that Jonas hopes Turner will “reconsider her harsh legal position and move forward in a more constructive and private manner”; he also disputed Turner’s claim that she didn’t know of the divorce filing and said it would violate the filing to relocate the children.
Forbes has reached out to Turner’s lawyer for comment.
Surprising Fact
In the suit, Turner said the “breakdown” of their marriage happened quickly. She claims they had a fight on August 15, Jonas filed divorce papers around September 1, and Turner found out about it “through the media” around September 5.
Key Background
Rumors of the couple’s divorce—along with theories of what caused it—began earlier this month, with Page Six saying Turner’s partying caused the break up, TMZ reporting the couple had “very different lifestyles” and People saying they “spent the whole summer apart.” In their statement issued September 6 on Instagram, though, Jonas and Turner said the divorce was a “united decision.” The couple was first spotted together in late 2016—attending a handful together—before Jonas’ younger brother, Nick Jonas, confirmed Turner and Jonas were dating in 2017 on Instagram. The pair became engaged in October of 2017 and married in May of 2019. The wedding, which came hours after the Jonas Brothers’ performance at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, was officiated by an Elvis impersonator, but the pair had a second, more formal wedding in France that June. Turner and Jonas had their first child in 2020 and their second in 2022. Turner has worked in the entertainment industry from a young age, but grew to fame for her role in Game of Thrones. Jonas was a child star member of the Jonas Brothers, created a second band—DNCE—during the Jonas Brothers’ hiatus, and is now touring with his brothers again. The world tour began last month in New York and will end in Ireland in 2024.
