A brief history of Apple Inc.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne in Jobs’ parents’ garage back in 1976. The company was started to bring Wozniak’s personal computer design to the market, hitting $1.5 billion in sales during the first 8 years for the company’s flagship products, Apple I and Apple II.

The company went public in December 1980 and released the first Macintosh in 1985. Jobs left the company in 1986, however, following a boardroom row with CEO John Sculley who was hired by Jobs following a stint at Pepsi (NASDAQ:PEP).

There were no new product releases or major design changes to Macintosh after Jobs left in 1986, which culminated in declining market share and Apple’s worst ever financial quarter in Q2 1997. Jobs, after selling his new computer company NeXT to Apple towards the end of 1996, rejoined Apple as interim CEO to help stabilize the decline and locate new leadership.

Jobs’ new role as interim CEO was shortened to iCEO — marking the beginning of a new era for the company. NeXT had been developing a UNIX-based operating system for its computers which formed the foundation of iOS, which is still used today.

Apple’s new products, with a streamlined user experience and their trademark iProduct branding, were able to kickstart rapid growth for the company. The release of the iPod in the early 2000s was shortly followed by the launch of the iPhone, which shot Apple’s revenue generation into the stratosphere. Today, Apple is the most valuable company in the world with a market cap of $2.724 trillion.
