Luis Rubiales Resigns As President Of The Royal Spanish Football Federation

The news everyone has been waiting for.

Luis Rubiales finally resigned as president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation on Sunday, September 10, three weeks after Spain’s triumph as the World Cup Champions in Sydney.

In an exclusive interview with Piers Morgan on Piers Uncensored, published at 9:42 p.m. (Paris Time), the 46-year-old announced having decided to resign. “Yes, I’m going to. Yes, I’m going to [resign]. I’m going to, because I cannot continue my work.”

Piers then asked whether his conversation with his family motivated him to finally take this decision.

The former RFEF President, who has been under attack after forcefully kissing Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the FIFA Women’s World Cup final on August 20, confirmed that it was indeed his family who pushed him to resign.

“Yeah, my father… my daughters. I spoke with them. It’s not… they know it’s not a question about me… some friends, really close to me. and they said to me, ‘Luis, now you have to focus on your dignity and to continue your life…”

Minutes later, Rubiales shared a statement through a tweet in which he announced his resignation as the Spanish Federation’s President but also as UEFA’s Vice-President.

The statement said “today, at 9:30 p.m., I transmitted to the interim president at the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Pedro Rocha, my resignation letter. I also informed him that I did the same with my position at UEFA so that my position as the Vice President can be replaced.”

Before signing the statement, Rubiales wrote “I have faith in the truth and I am going to do everything in my power to make it prevail. My daughters, my family and the people who love me have suffered the effects of a blatant persecution.”

A reminder that two days earlier, the Spanish public prosecutor’s office requested the indictment of sexual assault against Luis Rubiales.
