It’s been many, many years since Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr released a song together, so it’s no wonder that now that a new tune with their names attaches is out, fans rushed to support it. The two former Beatles members are back on the Billboard charts together, and their latest win isn’t confining them to one style of music.
McCartney and Starr appear on three different Billboard charts this week with their latest single, an updated rendition of their Beatles favorite “Let It Be.” It’s not uncommon for major stars to find their way to several lists at once, even with the same tune, but what does make the performance of “Let It Be” so special is that it’s present on two separate genre-specific tallies, which isn’t seen too often.
“Let It Be” blasts onto the Digital Song Sales chart this week, ranking as one of the bestselling tracks in America. The tune opens at No. 22, earning the second-highest debut of the frame. The single, which is actually fronted by Dolly Parton and which was created for her forthcoming album Rockstar, enters the race thanks to just under 2,900 purchases, according to data shared by Luminate.
Since the new version of “Let It Be” arrives on the all-genre Digital Song Sales chart, it would make sense that it should also appear on the same purchase-focused ranking of whatever genre it’s been labeled as. But this just-dropped take on the classic seems to defy simple description, at least according to its performance on the Billboard tallies this frame.
“Let It Be” also appears on both the Rock Digital Song Sales and Country Digital Song Sales charts. Those rankings look at the bestselling cuts in America in each genre, and there isn’t usually much crossover…at least not of the same title. On the Rock Digital Song Sales ranking, McCartney and Starr open at No. 2, narrowly missing out on becoming a winner. On the Country Digital Song Sales chart, the same title begins at No. 15. It scores the top debut on both lists, though clearly, competition was fiercer for a higher start on the latter roster.
