The Spanish Football Federation president is planning to resign tomorrow, according to ESPN and Spanish media, following FIFA beginning disciplinary proceedings after he kissed a female player without consent after the Spanish team won the Women’s World Cup on Sunday.
Luis Rubiales apologized Monday after kissing player Jenni Hermoso following Spain’s victory and facing immediate scrutiny from other players and on social media.
In his apology—posted to YouTube and translated by AFP—he said he should “take more care” while representing the federation, but added that the outrage over the incident was “idiotic.”
Rubiales did not comment on the lack of consent with the kiss—primarily what many online took issue with—but said he saw the kiss as “natural and normal.”
