The U.S. and Iran reached a deal Thursday for five American detainees to eventually leave Iran in exchange for the U.S. giving access to $6 billion of oil revenue and freeing a number of jailed Iranians, multiple outlets reported.
The U.S. prisoners were released from prison and moved into house arrest, according to the lawyer for one of the prisoners, where they will stay “for several weeks,” the New York Times reported.
A lawyer for one of the American prisoners moved to house arrest told CNN the move “is an important development,” but “is at best the beginning of the end and nothing more.”
The U.S. doesn’t have diplomatic relations with Iran, but had been working to negotiate the release for at least months, the Times reported; the negotiations were mediated by Switzerland, Oman and Qatar.
The White House hasn’t commented on the release of the imprisoned Americans, and Forbes has reached out for comment.
