U.S. Capitol Police have cleared all building on Capitol Hill after responding to a reported active shooter near the Senate office buildings, though police said there were no confirmed reports of gunshots.
Key Facts
Capitol Police tweeted just after 4:00 p.m. saying that while all buildings were cleared, the buildings have not reopened.
At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger reportedly said D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department got a call at 2:30 p.m. alerting them to an active shooter in the Senate Hart building who was wearing body armor.
Manger said Capitol Police have not found anything concerning nor anyone who “actually heard shots” and described the incident as one that “may have been a bogus call.”
Just after 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, Capitol Police emailed and tweeted asking anyone in the Senate buildings—located across the street from the Capitol—to shelter in place as officers search the area in response to a “concerning 911 call.”
D.C. Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Hugh Carew told a Politico reporter the active shooter claim “appears to be a bad call.”
