Britney Spears Says She Was ‘Back Handed’ By NBA Player Wembanyama’s Security Guard

Topline

Britney Spears said Thursday she was “back handed” in the face by a security guard for San Antonio Spurs player Victor Wembanyama late Wednesday, after the pop star tapped the newly drafted NBA rookie’s shoulder in Las Vegas.

Key Facts

Spears was reportedly at the restaurant Catch in Las Vegas’ ARIA resort when she went over to ask for a photo with the NBA player and a security guard slapped her.

In a statement posted to Twitter, Spears said she “tapped [Wembanyama] on the shoulder to get his attention” and to congratulate him on his success, before his security nearly knocked her to the ground and knocked her glasses off.

The Spurs rookie Wembanyama told reporters Thursday he believed somebody grabbed him from behind as he was walking into the restaurant and his security detail pushed her away—and he was later told Spears grabbed him.

The Associated Press reported Spears’ team filed a police report with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

The Las Vegas Police Department has yet to release a police report, but it told Forbes police responded to an incident regarding a battery investigation on the same block as the ARIA casino, but “no arrest or citations have been issued.”

Key Background

Spears was famously stuck in a 13-year-long conservatorship under her father Jamie and other court-appointed individuals who controlled almost every aspect of her life and finances, before being released from it in November 2021. Since the release, she has worried some fans with her social media, on which she frequently posts videos of herself dancing with vague captions. Wembanyama was the no. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft this year and will make his debut in the summer league with the Spurs on Friday night.
