Nicki Minaj is back inside the top 10 on the Hot 100 this week with her new single “Barbie World,” which debuts at No. 7. Achieving a top 10 hit is always a cause for celebration for any musician, but this latest success holds particular significance for Minaj. Not only does it mark her return to the competitive region, but it also helps her surpass some of the greatest and most influential rappers of all time.
With “Barbie World” becoming her twenty-third top 10 hit on the Hot 100, Minaj has joined a select group of artists who have amassed such an impressive record. This latest win helps Minaj leave behind both Eminem and Jay-Z, and now she alone holds the distinction of claiming the third-most top 10 hits among rappers on the Hot 100.
While Minaj’s accomplishment is noteworthy, she still has a considerable distance to cover to catch up with the reigning champion of the rap genre, Drake. Throughout his career, Drake has charted an astounding 68 top 10 hits, not only surpassing his fellow hip-hop musicians but also claiming the title of the artist with the most top 10 hits of all time. In fact, when comparing across all genres, Drake remains 28 top 10 hits ahead of the second-place contender, Taylor Swift, who has secured 40 top 10 singles.
Standing just ahead of Minaj on the list is Lil Wayne, who happens to be both her friend and the man who helped bring her to superstardom with his record label. Wayne has landed 25 top 10 hits, and while he is earning new ones at a slower pace compared to Minaj, it’s only a matter of time before she catches up to him and ultimately surpasses his record.
Looking ahead, Minaj’s fans have another reason to be excited. The rapper is set to release her highly-anticipated album Pink Friday 2 later this year. As one of the most eagerly awaited CDs of the year, there’s no telling how Minaj will promote it. Given her remarkable track record and immense popularity, it wouldn’t be surprising if the album spawns at least one or two more top 10 hits on the Hot 100. With this in mind, Minaj could find herself climbing the ranks on the list once again in just a matter of months.
