Neil Young fans around the world can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the legendary musician’s long-awaited album, Chrome Dreams, is set to be released on August 11. Originally planned for release back in 1977, this lost gem of an album has been eagerly anticipated by die-hard fans who have waited for decades for its official release.
Chrome Dreams is made up of studio recordings from between 1974 and 1976, according to a release announcing the title shared by his record label. Among the 12 tracks featured on the album, two have never been heard before, and four songs are making their debut on the vinyl edition of the album, which is sure to be especially popular among his fans.
Interestingly, Chrome Dreams was initially slated to drop in 1977, but Young’s plans changed, and the album was never officially released. That decision lead to widespread bootleg circulation of the pressing throughout the following several decades. Fans would eagerly seek out this elusive recording, adding to the aura surrounding the album’s mythic status, and by now, many of his most ardent supporters likely own a copy.
Three of the songs set to be featured on Chrome Dreams were released in September 2017 on Young’s album Hitchhiker. This taste only served to heighten the anticipation and intrigue surrounding the complete Chrome Dreams album. In a surprising move, Young released an album titled Chrome Dreams II in 2007, despite the fact that the original Chrome Dreams had yet to receive an official release.
Chrome Dreams will mark his first new album since the release of Toast and World Record, both created in collaboration with his band Crazy Horse. Those two efforts came out in 2022.
While fans eagerly await the arrival of Chrome Dreams, they can also look forward to another treat from Young. On July 14, he will be reissuing four of his iconic albums—Freedom, Ragged Glory, Weld and Arc—as part of a new box set.
